MLM is also known as: Multi-Level Marketing, network marking, direct selling, referral marketing.

Do not be alarmed by this question. A lot of people make the mistake of thinking that when someone asks this question they must immediately start defending the MLM industry. This is not necessarily true. You must determine what this person's opinion is of the industry. How do you do this? Easy. Ask them. "What do you know about the MLM industry?" Their answer will tell you the direction you need to take. You may be surprised to find their answer to be extremely positive about the industry and they were merely trying to find out what the company structure is.

As with many industries and opportunities, there is good news and bad news in regard to the network marketing industry.

The good news: ANYONE can participate.

The fact that anyone can get into a networking company means that some people can create a bad perception of something that is really good. Because of this, some people have had bad experiences in a network marketing company that can be attributed to any number of reasons. This can skew their perspective on the networking industry, so it is important to make them understand that not all companies are alike, even if they are in the same industry.

There is an interesting story that is worth mentioning. One day a friend inquired if I had ever burned my lips on a cup of coffee before. My response: "Of course!" The next question he asked was: "Did burning your lips on that cup of coffee stop you from drinking coffee?" My response: "Of course not". And that is exactly how you need to look at the MLM industry. Don't judge the entire industry off of one bad experience.

Today, there a many multi-level marketing companies that started from nothing and have progressed to become multi-billion dollar companies. They have attracted part-time people that wish to supplement their current income and those that are willing to invest even more time for an even greater reward.

The MLM industry attracts people from all different walks of life: teachers, corporate executives, doctors, lawyers, law enforcement officials....the list goes on and on.

With network marketing you invest yourself and your time to create a return that can give back your time when you have created a foundation that pays you commissions, even while you take a family vacation or work on other things. It is the very same concept that software companies and the movie industry utilize: Do your work up front, and continue to get paid for your efforts long term.

This industry gives people of all education levels the opportunity to create wealth than in any other business model. This is why MILLIONS of people of flocking to the network marketing industry every year. Some business colleges are now teaching network marketing as a true business strategy because of the many proven business models that are out there.
